“Looking at Pen’s paintings I am struck by her deep love of colour and her appreciation of the yogic body and nature. Pen moves through the entire spectrum of the rainbow, bathing her subject in shades of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Each painting is a meditation on a chosen hue in relation to a particular yoga pose, mudra, form of nature and symbol. Sometimes overlaying these elements in a single painting she creates layered paintings that seem to inhabit a psycho-spiritual space rather than a completely earth bound one. Her work invites contemplation, evoking serenity and strength simultaneously.”

THE ARTIST

Penelope was schooled at Michael Mount Waldorf and St Andrews School before completing a Fine Arts Degree at Stellenbosch University (Jewellery Design). Besides being an artist and potter, she has worked as a jeweller, graphic designer (specialising in magazine and label design), in Advertising, as well as a stint for the Arts Council of South Australia. She has studied astrology, ayurvedic medicine and yoga. She lives between Cape Town and an Overberg farm with her husband and two sons, whom she loves almost as much as her gardens.

To Penelope the daily practice of yoga is a way of accessing and connecting with the energies of our cosmos that are a reflection of the creation within us.
